Minnie to Harold Road
Floyd County, Kentucky

In 1990, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet constructed the first segment of the connection of KY 80 with US 23 from Garrett to Harold. H. A. Spalding designed this 5 mile section and was privileged to be selected for the preliminary design of the Minnie to Harold Road in 1997. After completion of the preliminary design for approximately 10 miles of roadway, H. A. Spalding began Final Design of Section 3 from the mouth of Tackett Branch to the project end near Harold. This section is considered the priority section because it will replace KY 979 along Big Mud Creek for several miles. The beginning of the Final Design process also required the conversion of the plans from metric to English units. Important design elements include: four bridges over Big Mud Creek, one bridge over Little Mud Creek, two box culverts for smaller streams and numerous smaller culverts. The project also includes several approaches to serve local traffic, many with turn lanes. A truck lane is introduced near the beginning of the project as the grade begins to increase when the roadway turns away from Big Mud Creek and starts up Tackett Branch.
