Liberty Street Water Storage Tank
Hazard, Kentucky

Completed in 1996, the 2 million gallon Liberty Street Storage Tank serves as the anchor for the operations of the Hazard Water System. The original tank, shown on the right of the picture, was constructed in the 1940’s and designed by H. A. Spalding Engineers. The new tank is a 80-foot diameter, 54-foot high welded steel tank. The old tank was taken out of service with completion of the new tank and will be removed at a later date. The photograph to the left shows an overhead view of both tanks during the construction period, just prior to placing the final roof panels on the new tank. H. A. Spalding’s responsibilities during construction included construction monitoring, review of contractor pay estimates and general project administration duties. Total tank construction costs were $627,000, which did not include site work completed by the City of Hazard prior to the start of tank construction. The old tank was only being used at half-capacity due to deterioration. With the new tank in operation, the water treatment plant operations returned to normal and a pump failure does not immediately jeopardize the water distribution system.
