DJ Plastics (Hazard Speculative Building)
Hazard, Kentucky

To encourage industrial development in the area, the City of Hazard developed a speculative, industrial building. H. A. Spalding was selected to provide the design for the proposed structure. A 39,000 square foot pre-engineered metal building was sited on a previously strip-mined area. Dynamic compaction was used for foundation preparation and due to funding constraints the concrete floor was not placed during initial construction. Before the building was under roof, a tenant was found for the building. DJ Plastics, a Louisville, Kentucky firm was interested in expanding to the area. A second project phase began which included: concrete floor, trenches for machinery piping and power, lighting, a second loading dock, office area, restrooms, HVAC and sprinkler system, all to meet the tenants requirements. In addition to the building sizing, H. A. Spalding completed the topographic survey, designed utility extensions (water, sewer and gas), designed site grading and parking lot, designed the trenches and loading dock, and selected a lighting system. During construction, H. A. Spalding provided construction supervision and project administration.
